Severe Texas Winter Storm Impacts NXP, Infineon and Samsung Semiconductor Fabs
Chris Goh, Director, Global Commodity Management
The unusually severe winter weather conditions in Texas, USA have prompted local energy providers last week to reduce or cut power to large-scale industrial operations, including semiconductor manufacturing operations to provide priority to residential customers and healthcare facilities.
The GCM and SRM teams are in close contact with suppliers with known manufacturing facilities in the region.
Currently, NXP Semiconductor, Infineon Technologies and Samsung Electronics have confirmed operations at their Semiconductor wafer fabrication plants in Austin have been halted until further notice.
As this was a planned power cut from the grid, appropriate measures would have been taken to shut down the fab safely to protect wafers in production as opposed to an abrupt power outage. However, there will inevitably be production delays depending on how long the power outages remain and the time needed for the eventual restarting of the fabs.
The scope of the impact such as affected part numbers is unclear currently due to the conditions at the fab.
Based on our knowledge, below are known products that may be built at the affected fabs:
- NXP: Automotive Microcontrollers (S9, SPC56 series), Power Management IC (PF100, PF3000, PF1550 series) and Sensors (FXL, MMA series).
- Infineon: Memory technologies such as NOR Flash from former Cypress acquisition and Flashbased Microcontrollers.
- Samsung Electronics: Logic foundry producing Application processors, Display Driver ICs, Memory Controller ICs and ASIC.
We will continue to keep close contact with the impacted suppliers to verify and identify areas of risk and recommended action items to affected Business Units.
In the meantime, if you have any questions, please feel free to contact me directly (chris_goh@jabil.com).
