Analog Devices Completes Its Acquisition of Maxim

September 15, 2021

As part of the continued semiconductor industry consolidation, last July Analog Devices Inc. (ADI) announced their plans to acquire Maxim Integrated Products Inc. (Maxim) for $21B and become the world’s second largest analog supplier behind only Texas Instruments. On August 26, 2021, thirteen months after the initial announcement, ADI completed the transaction.

The combined companies further strengthen ADI’s position as a high-performance analog company with revenues of more than $9B, over 10,000 engineers to continue to develop cutting edge solutions for their broad base of customers. The new company will be servicing 125,000 global customers, many through their distribution channel partners, and investing approximately $1.5B in research and development annually.

The newly combined company will focus in product areas such as mixed signal, RF & Microwave, data conversion (A/D and D/A), Digital Signal Processing (DSP) and advanced sensing technologies. The new company will be addressing the following markets below.

Their global manufacturing strategy will be combined between their own fabs and the partnership of various foundries. The vertically integrated manufacturing footprint will have four (4) front end fabs: Limerick (Ireland), Beaverton (Oregon), Wilmington (Massachusetts) and Camas (Washington). Their top foundry providers will be: TSMC, UMC, GlobalFoundries and Tower Semiconductor. The new company will have access to internal back-end assembly in Penang, Thailand and the Philippines, with OSATs providers such as JCET, ASE and AMKOR.

Jabil Perspective

As the combined company announces the new organization and management teams, we’ll work closely to keep you informed on any developments, particularly on the potential changes in the distribution channel, where Arrow was exclusive with ADI and Avnet has been exclusive with Maxim. Below is the current profile of our combined (direct and through distribution) business relationship.

Key Takeaways

  • The ADI acquisition of Maxim Semiconductor was completed on August 26, 2021, and they are now a combined company.
