Alert: Taiwan Quake Causes Brief TSMC Disruption, Operations Restored
In the early hours of January 21, 2025, a 6.4 magnitude earthquake struck southern Taiwan, causing tremors. With its epicenter located 38 kilometers southeast of Chiayi County Hall, the quake caused minor injuries and scattered structural damage. One notable aspect of the event was its impact on Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), one of the top chipmakers globally.
TSMC, a key supplier for tech giants such as Apple, Nvidia, and Qualcomm, temporarily evacuated staff as a precautionary measure at factories in central and southern Taiwan. Subsequent inspections confirmed that all facilities remained structurally sound, allowing operations to resume gradually. The company reported that water supply, power, and workplace safety systems were fully operational, and regular activities at all sites have recommenced. Additionally, TSMC clarified that its construction sites were unaffected and continued without interruption after safety and environmental assessments. While no significant damage was recorded, this temporary disruption highlighted the importance of maintaining operational continuity in a vital industry like semiconductor manufacturing.
While this earthquake recalls the more severe 7.4 magnitude quake in April 2024, which temporarily affected TSMC’s production, the company’s investments in earthquake-resistant infrastructure and disaster preparedness seem to have minimized operational disruptions this time. Taiwan's geographic location near tectonic plate junctions does pose challenges, but TSMC’s proactive measures have proven effective in ensuring resilience.
In the coming days, stakeholders will focus on TSMC’s damage assessments and its strategy to reinforce supply chain reliability. The incident highlights the need for continuous investment in disaster preparedness while reinforcing the global industry’s efforts to adapt and ensure stability in a dynamic environment.
