Alert Update: Sibelco Restarts Production and Customer Shipments at Spruce Pine Following Hurricane Helene
Key Update:
On October 10th, Sibelco, a leading player in the high-purity quartz industry and one of the two major quartz mine operators in Spruce Pine, North Carolina, resumed its production and customer shipments, which had been halted due to Hurricane Helene. This announcement follows the disruption in late September, when Hurricane Helene caused significant flooding and damage to infrastructure, impacting Sibelco and The Quartz Corp, vital suppliers of semiconductor-grade crucibles.
The CEO of Sibelco, Hilmar Rode, outlined that while the road to full recovery will be protracted, restarting our operations and resuming shipments to customers are important contributors to rebuilding the local economy.
In contrast, The Quartz Corp has not yet provided any update (as of 15th Oct) on resuming its services. As per their last communication on 2nd October, Initial assessments indicated that damage was largely confined to ancillary units, and the company remained optimistic about avoiding supply disruptions due to strong resilience measures and significant feedstock levels maintained post-COVID.
While key semiconductor suppliers had indicated that their operations were likely to remain unaffected due to adequate inventory levels and alternative sourcing strategies, they were cautious about the potential for extended disruptions. The resumption of operations at Sibelco is a positive step towards stabilizing supply chains that rely on high-purity quartz.
